Teaching to Transgress by bell hooks

In March we were delighted to be joined by Anya Waleson to open our discussion on bell hook’s text Teaching to Transgress. The prompts she shared to start our conversation are below. We would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. What boundaries do you encounter in your own teaching practice?

  2. What boundaries do you hope to transgress within your field?

How? Why? For whom? With whom?

  3. Which aspects of critical pedagogy are (not) useful?

Anja Waleson has an academic background in media, philosophy and education and has taught people between ages 6 and 76 years old throughout Europe, South-Asia and the Middle-East. She currently teaches pre-academic English Language Arts to teenagers at Hyperion Lyceum in Amsterdam. Her specialties include multiliteracy, oracy and she is committed to diversifying educational spaces, practices and curricula. You can find her at the intersection of education, literature and activism. As a queer, anti-racist activist she aims to cultivate curiosity, ownership, and engagement in her classroom and beyond.
