The Minor Gesture by Erin Manning

In September 2022 we were delighted to welcome Dr Jo Albin Clark to the Reading Network. Jo introduced The Minor Gesture by Erin Manning. She is a qualified teacher with a specialism of working with young children aged 3 to 7 years, has taught in Leeds and Bury as a teacher in Nursery, Reception, Year 1, 2 and Year 3, and held the role of Deputy Headteacher. Jo then moved to work as an adviser for Early Years working where she also worked in a Nursery School and Children’s Centre as a Senior Teacher. Jo then moved into university teaching whilst at the same time being a pedagogue to Children’s Centres in Knowsley. At the present time she works for Edge Hill University as a senior lecturer where, teaching on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Jo proposed the following questions to open our discussion:

  1. How does the minor gesture inspire your research/research-creation?

  2. What can Manning’s ‘autistic perception’ set in motion?

  3. What can we do with how Manning speaks to relationality, ‘shifting ecologies that include us but are not limited to us’ and ‘life as more-than-human’.
